I’ve been improvising with some of the same singers for over 20 years. We share a common musical language, trust and friendship that has allowed us to take risks and expand our sense of who we are, musically and personally. Sharing this process in public is a wonderful challenge– to maintain that feeling of connection and magic in a public space.
In the Blank Space Series there is no plan or safety net. The studio floor feels enormous and empty — until out of nowhere, a melody is unleashed, or a story or harmonic landscape unfurls and we push off into unknown waters, with trust as our compass. It’s a delicious feeling, catching the wave of creation, tapping into the collective field and making music from that place. A kind of portal opens and we all magically sail through together, improvisers and audience alike.
Blank Space is a not a performance per se, but a chance for us to share our process in case you might be inspired or even want to learn how to do it. Whenever possible, we invite an artist of a complementary discipline to work with us and there is also a time for audience members who would like to participate. If this piques your interest, we’d love to see you!
