Past Performances
I Am HereA voices of the Roundhouse Residency ProjectI Am Here, was an artist residency that addressed notions of home, sense of place, displacement, immigration and integration. The project celebrated the rich multicultural fabric of our city while recognizing the isolation and loneliness of difference it can generate. Coming from an extensive background of working with community groups as well as with professionals, resident artists, Laurel Murphy (improvisational singing) and Kathryn Ricketts (contemporary dance), facilitated the exploration of these themes through the use of voice, text and movement. The project culminated in several public performances.
Raven of the RailwayA partial remounting of Karen Jamieson's "Raven of the Railway" production that featured dancers Alvin Tolentino and Alisoune Payne and community dancers and singers. Laurel Murphy composed a vocal score and directed singers for 2 segments of the production. Part of an international festival of dance in April 2003.
HousewerkThe Improvox vocal group, featuring Laurel Murphy, Sara Mareirros, Heidi McCurdy, Dave Haddock and Renee Doruyter worked with the Nijinsky Gibber Jazz Club improvisational dance ensemble over a six month period under the direction of Artistic Director/Choreographer Jennifer Mascall. The ensembles experimented with combinations of voice and movement, improvising to develop a vocabulary that expressed personal and collective memories of home. The resulting material was performed as improvised sets at the Dance Centre and other locations.
